Be of Good Cheer, I Have Overcome the World
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world. John 16:33”
When Jesus was about to leave His disciples, it was a very big tragedy for them. They felt as fishes that were being taken out of water. The sorrow was so heavy in their heart that Jesus could see it written all over their bodies and thus He told them, “But because I have said these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you” John 16:6-7.
These Things I Have Told You
These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. This is a complete sentence though many use to read it is as if it is a part of the sentence after it. Many don’t use to notice the full stop after the word peace and they see it as ‘in me you may have peace but in the world you will have troubles’. The next sentence that informed out topic, which talks about the tribulations in the world and the source of encouragement for the Christians, is a different sentence. The whole verse 33 is simply stating that what is obtainable in Jesus is peace. It went further to state that though there are tribulations in the world for Christians but that they should not bother about it given the fact that the ruler of the world, the devil, has been dethroned thereby bringing their him and the entire world under the control of Jesus and His coheirs. There are some secrets that Jesus revealed to his disciples in this context that he called ‘these things’ and the benefits of these revelations that He called ‘these things’ is that it leads to PEACE. It leads a man to his Sabbath rest, “There remains, then, a Sabbath-rest for the people of God; for anyone who enters God’s rest also rests from his own work, just as God did from his” Heb 4:9. The peace that I mean here, is a type of peace that cannot be bought with money, John 14:27. Peace in business, peace in ones profession, peace in ones academic career, peace in ones family, ministry and so on. Since time will not permit me to dwell more on this matter since it is not the major subject of discussion, I wish to state clearly and in summary that ‘these things’ here and as it concerns you the reader, means every word that comes forth from the mouth of God (Matt 4:4). They are spoken to you that in Jesus you may have peace. Search for ‘these things’ it will lead to your peace. The ‘MAY’ is that sentence ‘that in Me you may have peace’ is there to tell you that at times you may have chastisements from Him which according to Heb 12 : 11, does not seem pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and PEACE for those who have been trained by it. So everything that is in Him and from Him leads to PEACE.
But Be of Good Cheer
The word ‘but’ is a conjunction that is used to introduce a phrase or clause contrasting with what has already been mentioned. This means that whenever the conjunction ‘but’ comes into a sentence, the phrase or clause that will follow it must negate what was being said. Then what was it that Jesus was saying before this conjunction? It was all about tribulation, crisis, death, persecutions and so on.
These things I have spoken to you, that you should not be made to stumble. 2 “They will put you out of the synagogues; yes, the time is coming that whoever kills you will think that he offers God service. 3 “And these things they will do to you because they have not known the Father nor Me. 4 “But these things I have told you, that when the time comes, you may remember that I told you of them. And these things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you. John 16:1-4
After filling their hearts with these mind perplexing words, he now said, ‘but be of good cheer…’. The phrase ‘be of good cheer’ does not mean the same thing as ‘cheer up’. To be of good cheer means to be courageous while to cheer up means to be happier. This is why many version of the bible that does not use the phrase ‘be of good cheer’ use things like, ‘but be courageous’ NJB, ‘But take heart’,NLT, ‘But take courage’;NRS and so on. These words like be strong, be courageous, be bold and so on are common words in the bible. Like in the book of Joshua 1:6 you will hear God speaking to Joshua, thus: “Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their forefathers to give them”. This is how God tells his servants and children that there is no course for alarm, that there is nothing to fear, that there is no reason to look around in fear. This is why even the spirit of God who is the spirit of sonship is called the spirit of boldness. This is also why any Christian that breaks down in the face of crisis or tribulation is seen as illegitimate and one that does not have the spirit of his father. For this reason, when some Israelites where sent to go and spy the promised land, some reported that they saw their enemies as giants while they saw themselves as grasshoppers while Caleb and Joshua reported otherwise. In reaction to their reports, God said, “But because my servant Caleb has a different spirit and follows me wholeheartedly, I will bring him into the land he went to, and his descendants will inherit it”, Numbers 14:24. Caleb has a different spirit, the spirit of his father. In the book of Daniel chapter 6:3, it was called an excellent spirit. Jesus said that they should be of good cheer, that they should be courageous, that they should be strong. Why 😕 When the servant of Elijah saw some numerous enemies surrounding them, he shouted in fear that they were finished but Elijah told him that he should not be afraid. He did not just start telling him to be strong without seeing something. No he had seen something.
“Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha 2 Kings 6:16-17.
He had seen the chariots of fire and the horses that were all over the mountain for them. In the same way, Jesus did not just start telling them to be of good cheers,
I Have Overcome the World
Alleluia, that is the message, that is our source of encouragement, and that is why we should be of good cheer. He has overcome the world. The entire world and its powers have been overcome by our Lord and we were inside Him when this happened so all of us overcame the world. The world and all its troubles are under our feet. This is why at a time Jesus said, “l will not speak with you much longer, for the prince of this world is coming. He has no hold on me John 14:30 ”. At another point He said, “Now is the time for judgment on this world; now the prince of this world will be driven out John 12:31”. Today, the prince of the ruler of the world has been judged and has been cast out. He has been disarmed according to Col 2:15. So all authority both in heaven and on earth has been given to Jesus Matt 28:18. Satan who is the prince of this world is powerless just like a toothless bulldog. He can only bark but can no longer bite.
Somebody will quickly ask, but why is it that Satan is still dominating many lives? The answer is that those who fail to believe will continue to suffer the problem that was there before Jesus disarmed the devil, that is, the dominion of Satan, John 3:18.
The Truth of the Matter
And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:6. … and we (Christ and His followers) were seated far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every title that can be given, not only in the present age but also in the one to come Ephesians 1:20-21. Presently we have been given the authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy and nothing will by any means harm us Luke 10:19. Believe in this and walk in total victory. Let the devil know that you are aware of the fact that he has been stripped off power and he will stop tormenting you with sickness, lack of children, academic crisis, poverty and so on. Once more I say be of good courage, we have overcome the world.
